Opening ZIP files is something that people associate with computers, but can also be done on a phone or tablet. If you download a compressed file on your Android device, it is not that difficult to extract the contents. We’ll show you how.
Every Android phone comes with a file manager app, but they are usually barebones and can’t open ZIP files. Luckily, there are a number of apps on the Google Play Store that can do this for free.
One application we like is “Files by Google”. This app is not only great for uncompressing ZIPs, but also an all-in-one file manager that can also be used to free up space on your smartphone.
First, download Files by Google from the Google Play Store on your Android device. Next, open the app and locate the ZIP file you want to open. If you downloaded a compressed file, look for the “Downloads” folder.
From there, select a file to open the Extract dialog. Tap the “Extract” button to open the file.
You will see a progress bar and then a dialog will inform you that the file has been unzipped. Tap “Done” to finish. If you want to remove the ZIP file, you can check the “Delete ZIP File” box while closing the pop-up menu.
There she is! Content extracted from the ZIP file will be placed in the same folder location as the ZIP file itself.
